Al-Balad

لَآ أُقۡسِمُ بِهَٰذَا ٱلۡبَلَدِ1

I swear by this city, Makkah1

وَأَنتَ حِلُّۢ بِهَٰذَا ٱلۡبَلَدِ2

And you, [O Muhammad], are free of restriction in this city2

وَوَالِدٖ وَمَا وَلَدَ3

And [by] the father and that which was born [of him]3

لَقَدۡ خَلَقۡنَا ٱلۡإِنسَٰنَ فِي كَبَدٍ4

We have certainly created man into hardship4

أَيَحۡسَبُ أَن لَّن يَقۡدِرَ عَلَيۡهِ أَحَدٞ5

Does he think that never will anyone overcome him5

يَقُولُ أَهۡلَكۡتُ مَالٗا لُّبَدًا6

He says, "I have spent wealth in abundance6

أَيَحۡسَبُ أَن لَّمۡ يَرَهُۥٓ أَحَدٌ7

Does he think that no one has seen him7

أَلَمۡ نَجۡعَل لَّهُۥ عَيۡنَيۡنِ8

Have We not made for him two eyes8

وَلِسَانٗا وَشَفَتَيۡنِ9

And a tongue and two lips9

وَهَدَيۡنَٰهُ ٱلنَّجۡدَيۡنِ10

And have shown him the two ways10

فَلَا ٱقۡتَحَمَ ٱلۡعَقَبَةَ11

But he has not broken through the difficult pass11

وَمَآ أَدۡرَىٰكَ مَا ٱلۡعَقَبَةُ12

And what can make you know what is [breaking through] the difficult pass12

فَكُّ رَقَبَةٍ13

It is the freeing of a slave13

أَوۡ إِطۡعَٰمٞ فِي يَوۡمٖ ذِي مَسۡغَبَةٖ14

Or feeding on a day of severe hunger14

يَتِيمٗا ذَا مَقۡرَبَةٍ15

An orphan of near relationship15

أَوۡ مِسۡكِينٗا ذَا مَتۡرَبَةٖ16

Or a needy person in misery16

ثُمَّ كَانَ مِنَ ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُواْ وَتَوَاصَوۡاْ بِٱلصَّبۡرِ وَتَوَاصَوۡاْ بِٱلۡمَرۡحَمَةِ17

And then being among those who believed and advised one another to patience and advised one another to compassion17

أُوْلَـٰٓئِكَ أَصۡحَٰبُ ٱلۡمَيۡمَنَةِ18

Those are the companions of the right18

وَٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُواْ بِـَٔايَٰتِنَا هُمۡ أَصۡحَٰبُ ٱلۡمَشۡـَٔمَةِ19

But they who disbelieved in Our signs - those are the companions of the left19

عَلَيۡهِمۡ نَارٞ مُّؤۡصَدَةُۢ20

Over them will be fire closed in20
