Hamza's qirāʾa belongs to the Kufan school and is distinguished by notable phonetic features, including the sakt (brief pause on a sukun before hamza) and extended madd, making it one of the more demanding recitations in performance.
Hamza's qirāʾa historically spread in Kufa, the eastern lands, and parts of Anatolia. It maintains its presence in qirāʾat centres, although the Hafs recitation now predominates in those regions.
