Tajwīd rules
Rules of nūn sākinah & tanwīn
Four rules — iẓhār (clear), idghām (merging), iqlāb (conversion to mīm), and ikhfāʾ (concealment) — depending on the letter following the nūn sākinah or tanwīn.
Rules of mīm sākinah
Three rules — ikhfāʾ shafawī, idghām shafawī, and iẓhār shafawī (the labial rules).
Prolongations (Madd)
The natural madd (2 counts) and its branches: wājib muttaṣil, jāʾiz munfaṣil, lāzim (6 counts), and ʿāriḍ lis-sukūn.
Qalqalah
The bounce of the letters qāf, ṭāʾ, bāʾ, jīm, dāl when sākin — minor mid-word, major when stopping.
Tafkhīm & Tarqīq
Heavying the elevated letters and lightening the rest, with special rules for rāʾ, lām (in the name of Allah), and alif.
Articulation points (Makhārij)
The seventeen articulation points across the cavity, throat, tongue, lips, and nasal passage — the basis of correct pronunciation.
Color key
- Red — Madd — prolongation of the sound (strongest is the necessary madd, 6 counts)
- Green — Ghunnah — nasalization (idghām and ikhfāʾ with ghunnah)
- Blue — Qalqalah — the echoing/bounce of a sākin letter (qṭbjd)
- Grey — Silent letters — written but not pronounced
Exact shades vary between mushaf editions — the rules matter more than the colors.
