Ibn Kathir al-Makki

Abdullah ibn Kathir al-Makki (45–120 AH / 665–737 CE), the leading imam of Makkah in Quranic recitation and one of the Ten canonical reciters. He met several Companions of the Prophet ﷺ, and his chain traces the recitation through Ubayy ibn Kaab and Abdullah ibn al-Saib.

The qirāʾa of Ibn Kathir represents the Meccan school with roots stretching to the time of the Companions. It features a direct connection to the Hijaz and includes phonetic characteristics such as shorter madd extensions and particular treatment of hamza.
